The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, has ordered an investigation into the death of Ikran Tahlil, a female member of the Somali National Intelligence Service (NISA), amid growing public outrage over the case and growing controversy, Prime Minister Roble and President Farmajo.
Ikran Tahlil, a 24-year-old Internet security expert with the National Intelligence and Security Agency, was abducted in June 2021, and Somali intelligence officials said last week that Tahlil had been killed. Al-Qaeda extremist group Al-Shabaab, but Al-Shabaab has denied any involvement.
President Farmajo, who has been wary of the girl’s case, finally said on Monday that he had appointed a five-member commission to expedite investigations into Ikran Tahlil’s case.
” I hereby appoint a 5-Member Commission of inquiry Chaired by the Attorney-General and deputized by Head of Military Court to expedite investigations on the case of IIkran Tahlil and to hand over the findings and evidence to responsible legal institutions for execution of Justice. Said Monday in a statement published on Twitter.
Somali intelligence director Fahad Yassin has been embroiled in controversy since he fired the prime minister, complaining about his handling of the Ikran Tahlil case, but President Farmajo has opposed the prime minister’s decision to step down commander national intelligence, which further alienated Farmajo and Roble.
Fahad Yassin, who supported Farmajo when he took office in 2017, appointed President Farmajo as the president’s security adviser and appointed another NISA official as director, thwarting Roble’s attempt to oust Fahad Yassin.
