DP World Berbera hands over new pilot boat to Somaliland Port Authority
Berbera, 31 august 2020 – DP World Berbera has handed over a new pilot boat to the Somaliland Port Authority (SPA), which will increase the capacity of the port’s
marine services in line with the current expansion of the port.
The boat, named Sanaag, will be used to transport maritime pilots between land and inbound and outbound ships at Berbera port. The building of the boat and its sea trails
was managed by P&O Maritime Logistics, which will also provide training and support to the SPA pilot crews over the next 12 months.
The Sanaag’s over length is 12.3 metres and is powered by Caterpillar C7 350hp engines and ZF V drive gearboxes through a conventional stern gear, providing it with 18 to 20 knots operational speed.
The boat is also fitted with a full array of navigational equipment with Radar, GPS plotter, sounder, AIS and Sailor VHF radios, as well as a full CCTV system covering all areas of the boat.
The handing over the boat to SPA, is another milestone in the development of the Berbera Port by DP World, as it recently completed a 400 metre quay and yard extension of the new container terminal at the port,
which accounts for around 70 percent of the complete scope of the project.
Once completed, it will increase the terminal’s capacity by 500,000 TEUs per year. The terminal is on schedule for commissioning by the end of quarter 1, 2021, and will further strengthen Berbera Port as a major
regional trade port servicing the Horn of Africa.
